I spent last night going through the HTML tutorial on www.w3schools.com and have to say that it is the easiest and clearest tutorial I have seen in a while. Last night was mostly review for me since I already know HTML, but tonight its on to XHTML to learn what is different.

They have tons of tutorials - all free - on the site and you can even get certification in web development, though I don't know what its worth.
