This may or may not be helpful but in the past I have downloaded files from my professor's site and would occasionally be asked for the username/password and would let me download when I hit escape but I think it only happened when I was using the school's computers, not at home. Does it have anything to do with the OS? I'm on Mac OSX and it downloaded fine. Or does it have to do with you being on a network?
Just tried on my Windows ( 98 ) and in IE it just opened the document in the browser, it didn't download anything.
If you're getting the prompt when you download, it doesn't seem like it would be an issue with your Word setup since the file hasn't even been downloaded yet. Unless, like IE, it's trying to open the file rather than download it?
