'You better watch out, you better not cry' asong from 'santa claus is coming to town'. (sung partly by BING Crosby) Bing died on 14th October 1977–and his DVD Holiday Inn was released on 14th October 2008.
But the clue probably points to this article from USA today on 14th Oct 2008. Could mean the last word may be coming soon.

If the later clue referring to an earlier date-related clue being a "red herring", perhaps this clue has something to do with a town called Santa Claus, Indiana (USA)?

Could very well be that the 'date' retaed clue is this. If so, the Red herring could be whatever we could link with 'Santa' or 'Santa Claus' (or an anagram of it). Then, it could be that 'Santa Claus' is what they wanted us to find(Red herring?). At this point hard to guess.
