I was skimming through all these Search Engine Optimization sites and many of the subscription based services promise to "make you number one in Google." While I'm sure that that is a fairly overly bold statement...what is reasonably expected from an SEO company for their services to be considered successdul?

Their "number one in google" claim is misleading. You will become number one in google for the name of your website, or a keyword phrase that is so obscure no one else would have it.

I have never used an Search Engine Optimization company, as I prefer to do it myself. It is exceedingly difficult to get on the first page of google without paying for it.

Not for everyone, but for most people. I've seen people who buys a website and two weeks later after google updated the Page Ranking, they went from a PR 0 to PR 6 and was indexed on first page.

You just gotta know how, and its not that easy either. And I wouldn't pay for it, I did it once, waste of money. They just submitted my site to some directories, most of them were in another language that I do not speak or understand and they sent me a file to download. Which I did, all they gave me was links to sites and tips (which most people know). Took my codes and gave me tips bleh bleh bleh. I could get that from a free service.

YOu never know, some services out there do work, but it won't get you all the way to NUMBER ONE but.. Search Engine Optimization isn't that easy
