I've heard that meta tags are just not as important as they used to be. Through reading a lot, I have found that the best ways to increase your Search Engine Optimization are
1) title tag - don't just put the title of your website - make it keyword rich
2) alt image tags - search engines can't read graphics
3) one way links to your website from high Page Ranking pages
4) CONTENT - this is the most important. Aim for a keyword density around 5%

Any other tips?

I think the most important are one-way backlinks.

yes on-page Search Engine Optimization is not that difficult however getting backlinks and good content requires both good amount of time and effort
