I don't think that its useful to waste your time on meta tags as there are hardly any search engines which rely on meta tags these days

Search engines do rely on meta tags. They use the title and description tags but do not rely on keywords tags, but still it doesnt hurt to have them becuase some search engines actually do use them.

The description metatag has nothing to do with how a website ranks in search engines, however SE sometimes do use this description as the description of the websites in SERP's
