What is the difference between being ranked high in Google vs being ranked high in Yahoo as it relates to traffic and, in regards to commercial sites, in regards to commerce? Or is there not much of a difference?

I think google likes content, while yahoo favors older domains.

There isn't a lot of difference. Yahoo's spiders are faster than Google's.

Now, when I first learned about Search Engine Optimization, I was basically told that you should strive for high rank in google and if you got that, you would be high ranking in all the other big search engines. Is this true? Is Google the hardest to get a good rank in?

Nop, but if is your site optimizated for Google, it is optimizated for MSN and Yahoo too.
SO, if you have high rang on Google, you have it on MSN and Yahoo!. |

I notice that Yahoo ranks higher depending the actual html of your site and Google ranks higher depending on the popularity.

I focus on google more, because everybody else does and my Page Ranking is important to me. Most people use google as a search engine so I want to get good results from it.

I find it easier to get a high ranking in yahoo, google seems to favour older sites.
the yahoo Link: command usually shows lots more backlinks than google, google seems more selective in accepting them |

My experience: From Google 40-50% more visitors.
Also, Yahoo likes old websites, online since 90s or beginning of 2000s , Google doesn't care. Google only cares how old your links and their Pagerank and site reputation. |

I rank well in msn but very poorly in Google. I think the problem is google wants more content on your home page, whereas msn seems to want links. The problem for me is that I've heard Google has got around 65-70% market share in the UK and msn only 6-7% - so at the moment I'm not getting too many visitors :-(
